Three Beautiful Things This Week was inspired by a wonderful blog that Three Beautiful Things. Everyday,
Clare writes about 3 Beautiful
Things that
happen each day
in her life. It's a wonderful
blog! I can
only hope to
imitate her in a very small
way.
1) The storm wasn't a big one, but it was enough to cover the ground and shovel. That's okay. We have a lot more winter to go. It's just gotten started. We are having January temperatures in November. I forgot it was November.
2) The first of the two shows I do is today. It's the kick off of Toys for Tots. I'm looking forward to this event. Wish me luck!
3) Pixie is still adjusting to the new carpeting. That means that when we are not home, Pixie goes down to the basement. She doesn't like it, but it's warm. Pixie has her blanket and bed. Pixie has a huge area in which to play. She's fine. She just wants her couch. I guess we'll have to see about getting a couch for downstairs. She will be happy if we do!

30 Words Thursday:: Pixie
Pixie is so confused.
Not only did we get new carpet today,
but
when I'm gone she has to be in the basement.
No more going potty on the carpet.

31 Days of Awesomeness:: How Can You Say A Rainy Day is Awesome?
We woke up to heavy rain this morning. Not only that, the rain was cold! I dreaded going out in the rain to walk Pixie, but it was a necessity and it was time. Pixie had to go!!!
Long pants on. check
Warm Sweater on. check
Shoes and socks on. check
Umbrella. What? No umbrella?
Oh, well, it was off into the rain we went. Pixie was not happy, but she was quick. We were back in the house in no time at all. We were both soaked to the bone which required a towel for Pixie to dry her off, and a complete change of clothes for me to dry off. I slipped back into my jammies. I added warm socks and slippers, and a thick warm robe. I Love a rainy day!!!
Having grown up in the New Mexico desert, I learned to love a rainy day. To this day, having moved to Minnesota where there is usually ample rain, I still love a rainy day. Books get read. Special food gets cooked. (Today I made chile! Hit the spot!) Beads are made. Pixie and I cuddle while I catch up on TV programs that I recorded for a rainy day. And it rained all day!! Perfect!
I have more great memories of rainy days than any other day. I was married on a rainy day. When the kids were small, we'd make tents, have picnics and camp out in the house on a rainy day. We'd build forts out of sheets. We'd eat popcorn and apples for supper and watch TV. (Homework was completed quickly on those days.) I'd crochet. We'd read. (Some things never change.) Sometimes, the kids and I would even sneak outside for a few quick jumps in the puddles, then, it was bath time and time to read before bedtime.
When the kids were older, we'd make our favorite comfort foods. We'd sit and eat pizza, play games, and talk. I heard their dreams and sorrows. Once in a long while, we'd even build a fort and eat apples and popcorn for supper.
Now that they are adults, they love the rain, too. They've told me that they love to hear the rain as they go to sleep.
So, a rainy day! Another bit of AWESOMENESS!!!

30 Words Thursday - Pixie Had Her Teeth Cleaned
Pixie had a rough day.
She had her teeth cleaned, and her mouth hurts.
She's mad at me.
I took her to the dentist.
It's all my fault she hurts.

30 Words Thursday - The Diva
Winter is almost over.
Yet, she cuddles her fur.
Such a diva!
No matter where.
No matter when.
It's all about her.
She fools "her friends."
She's a good dog!

Snippets of Pixie - What Pixie Wants RIGHT NOW
Her ears rubbed
A treat
To sleep undisturbed on her couch unless
Her ears are rubbed
Or
She gets a treat
To go to pet expo
To go anywhere in the car
To be covered up when she's cold
To have her ears rubbed
To be told she's beautiful
To get a treat
(Are you seeing a pattern here?)
To be loved.

Pixie, the Hospice Therapy Dog
I honestly don't know how Hospice got my name, but one day, in my email, was a note from the volunteer coordinator of hospice asking if I would be interested in joining the hospice team with Pixie. I had to really think about this, and I did say yes. I had to go through a background check, of course, and I had to jump through a few hoops, including some training. Then I received my first assignment. And we were off.
This photo is one of Pixie as she's waiting in the car to leave for "work." If there's enough time in the car, Pixie grabs a quick nap. I'm not allowed to take photos in the nursing homes or of the clients with whom we work, and that is fine with me. As soon as we walk in the doors of the facilities where we "work," Pixie hikes up her shoulders and heads down the halls.
It's amazing to see her "work." We leave smiles in the pathways we walk.
Everyone seems to know her name. They don't know mine!! :) That's okay.
We have met some wonderful women and men. Most of them like dogs, but those who say they don't, we assure that we will not come near them. In one mental facility, one gentleman told me he hated dogs and that if he had his 22, he'd shoot Pixie. I assured him that we would not go near him. Pixie didn't like him at all!
I've found that Pixie is very sensitive and picks up a lot of information as she works.
1) I have found that if someone is actively dying, even if they are not aware of it, she will go into their rooms, but she will not go near them.
I thought that was interesting.
2) I have found that if someone doesn't like dogs, or if they prefer cats, Pixie will go to them, very reluctantly.
3) I have found that, often, staff sometimes need Pixie's visits more than clients.
4) I have found that Pixie likes her ice cream treats when she is finished.
5) I have found that there are some very wonderful people who know they are dying but still wish to live as much as they can while they are alive.
6) I have found that Pixie is a good hospice therapy dog.

I spent the day in my Woman Cave
Isn't it great? I love my cave! You can't see my car, but it's next to the pink chair. Pixie gets in the back seat and goes to sleep. We are both very happy in our cave, and I get a lot done whether it be felting or polymer clay. I'm outside while still being inside.

It's All About How You Handle Your Humans
When things get stressful, it’s okay to remove yourself from the situation and get on the couch to sleep.
When you get a treat you don’t like, spit it out because you will get a new one and the kind you like!
If you don’t want to do something, be sure to get on the couch and go to sleep. Then no one can make you do anything you don’t want to do.
If you want something, look into your human’s eyes with a look of love. It works every time.
Sleep every chance you get.
When you want your picture taken, pose. Humans think it’s cute when you do this. They will take pictures then leave you alone so you can sleep.
If you want to smell your human’s butt, you have to sneak up on them and then make it look like it was an accident. They don’t get mad at you then. I still don’t see the problem.
When you don’t want to play “where’s Pixie,” just let your human cover her eyes and give her a bump noses. After that things go back to normal and you can go back to sleep.
When your human makes you move from your comfortable place on the bed just to pull the covers up, get up and leave. Humans want you there, and they really don’t need covers. They will come and get you. You will get the warm place in bed, and they still won’t have covers!
When it snows outside, be sure to run in the snow. Humans like to see you run, then sneak around them to go in the house, especially if your feet are muddy. They are so happy because you were running they forget about the mud.
It’s all about how you handle your humans. Now, I need to sleep.

It's Finally Officially Official!!!!
I picked up the mail on Saturday.
Here's what I received.
This was the envelope I opened.
Then I found...
Yes, it's Pixie's red heart that she can only wear when she's
"working."
So, I had to make it removable.
Now, I can put it on her collar when she goes out to do her therapy job.
Sigh!!
She's a therapy dog!!!

Silent Night...
It's been a rough week taking care of my human when she was sick. You know how it is, as soon as I was let in the door, I had to race upstairs to insure my place on the bed before my human could take that place away from me. I was out of breath, and my human had to bring my treat upstairs. She just seemed tired, but that wasn't my fault. I know where my place is, and she could not have it. It was a tough job, but someone had to do it. It was also necessary to teach her that where I am, there must be my treat. Sigh! I'm happy now. My human keeps talking about flutter bombs. I don't get that at all. I thought the air smelled good! Well, now, I'm so tired. I must not let the responsibility of taking care of my bed be let down. I must sleep.

Pixie doesn't like her veggies.
Every night, I make Pixie's raw diet.
It sits in the refrigerator until morning.
In the morning, the raw meat has rehydrated and so have the veggies.
They are saturated in the liquid.
As you can see, the liquid and the meat is gone.
However, what is left are the,
you're right,
veggies.
I have to sprinkle a raw food powder on the veggies, and then
Pixie will finish most of her veggies.
So, how does Pixie like her veggies?
Well, I can tell you how Pixie likes her sweet potatoes.
Add a little butter and some brown sugar, and
Pixie will eat an entire sweet potato!
That's my girl,
she knows what tastes the best!!
I think I'll have to try this with carrots, too!!!

Guess Who Passed her Therapy Dog Test!!!!
That's right!!!
Pixie is going to be a therapy dog.
She has two more observations to go, and then, it's official!!
Pixie will receive her red heart and scarf.
She will be able to give of herself without even knowing she's doing it!!
I'm so proud of the girl!!!
She's almost a therapy dog!!!

She could hardly believe her eyes when she saw her cupcake!
Of course, I had to take off the dangerous stuff so she could eat her cupcake!
Her cake is ready!!!
Pixie starts on her cupcake!!!
She decided to carry it to the middle of the living room floor.
Here's what's left of her cupcake,
on the living room floor.
She's happy,

For those who Have NEVER seen this Before...
Pixie is up and walking!
Yes, I said,
WALKING!!!
See, she's standing, not laying down!
AMAZING!
We walked a mile today.
Here's what happened when we got home.
She was tired and ready for her nap.
It was a little bit cool this morning!
Sleep well, sweet Pixie.
Sleep well.
And she did for the rest of the day!
