30 Words Thursday:: Kare-uh-Mel or Car-mul?

I don't know how you say it,
 but I say
Car-mul.
I hear people say
Care-uh-mel
and I wonder where they learned to talk like that.

30 Words Thursday: Grab an image (preferably one you shot or one you have permission to use). Write exactly 30 Words (no more, no less). Post it.

I learned to talk like that by reading the word and noting that there is an 'a' in the middle, thus, 'care-uh-mel' lol! Actually I think it's regional. In Ohio where I was born they say care-uh-mel. In Arizona where I live now they say car-mul. I can be found to order either a Car-mul or a Care-uh-mel Macchiato at Starbucks depending on my mood :-D

When in doubt I always try to act British and add extra syllables to every thing I say. Like Aluminium instead of Aluminum...

When I was in college I studied with a professor who was then in the beginning stages of a project called the Dictionary of American Regional English. They had teams of research assistants traveling the country asking people to name things. There is definitely a regional bias toward pronunciations. For the record, I say it car-mel. Either way they are YUM! Thanks for joining in the 30 Words. Enjoy the day! Erin
